  • Desert Definition: Types & Precipitation Levels - Explore Arid & Semi-Arid Regions
A place on Earth that has little or no measurable precipitation is called a desert.

Here are some more specific terms depending on the type of desert:

    * Arid desert: A desert that receives less than 10 inches (250 mm) of precipitation per year.

    * Semi-arid desert: A desert that receives between 10 and 20 inches (250-500 mm) of precipitation per year.

    * Cold desert: A desert that experiences freezing temperatures for a significant portion of the year.

    * Coastal desert: A desert located near a coastline, often influenced by cold ocean currents.

    * Polar desert: A desert characterized by low temperatures and very little precipitation.

It's important to note that the term "desert" doesn't always refer to a place that is completely devoid of precipitation. Even the driest deserts experience occasional rain or snowfall.
