  • Point Source Pollution: Definition, Examples & Impact
Pollution that comes from only one source is called point source pollution.

Here are some examples of point source pollution:

    * Industrial discharge: Factories and manufacturing plants releasing wastewater or emissions into the environment.

    * Sewage treatment plants: Discharge of treated or untreated wastewater.

    * Oil spills: Accidental releases of oil from ships or pipelines.

    * Agricultural runoff: Runoff from farms containing fertilizers, pesticides, or animal waste.

    * Leaking underground storage tanks: Leaks from tanks storing gasoline, oil, or other chemicals.

In contrast, non-point source pollution comes from multiple, diffuse sources. Examples include:

    * Urban runoff: Runoff from streets and parking lots carrying pollutants like oil, gasoline, and trash.

    * Agricultural runoff: Runoff from farms carrying fertilizers, pesticides, and animal waste.

    * Atmospheric deposition: Pollutants in the air that settle onto land or water.
