    The hardest known natural material is diamond.

    Diamonds are made entirely of carbon atoms arranged in a very specific crystal structure. This structure makes them incredibly strong and resistant to scratching. They are the hardest known natural material on the Mohs Hardness Scale, which ranks minerals based on their ability to scratch other minerals.

    While there are synthetic materials that are even harder than diamond, it remains the hardest naturally occurring substance.
