  • Atmospheric Water: Understanding Water Vapor, Clouds & Precipitation
There are three main types of water found in the atmosphere:

    1. Water vapor: Water vapor is the gaseous phase of water. It is invisible and makes up about 1% of the Earth's atmosphere by volume. Water vapor is constantly evaporating from the Earth's surface and condensing to form clouds.

    2. Liquid water: Liquid water is found in the atmosphere in the form of clouds, fog, and rain. Clouds are collections of tiny water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. Fog is a cloud that forms near the ground. Rain is liquid water that falls from clouds when the droplets become too heavy to stay suspended in the air.

    3. Solid water: Solid water is found in the atmosphere in the form of snow, sleet, and hail. Snow is frozen water that falls from clouds in the form of ice crystals. Sleet is a mixture of snow and rain that occurs when the temperature is near freezing. Hail is frozen raindrops that form when raindrops freeze inside clouds.
