  • Furan Basicity: Understanding its Weak Protonation Behavior
The basicity of furan is very weak. This is because the oxygen atom in furan is sp² hybridized and has two lone pairs of electrons. These lone pairs are not available for protonation, so furan cannot accept a proton. In addition, the positive charge that would result from protonation would be localized on the oxygen atom, which is not a very stable arrangement.
