    Abstract:

    Pine savannas are unique ecosystems characterized by their open canopy of widely spaced pine trees and a diverse understory of grasses, wildflowers, and shrubs. These ecosystems are found in various regions worldwide and provide important ecological and economic benefits, including timber production, wildlife habitat, and recreation. Understanding the factors that maintain the health and resilience of pine savannas is crucial for their effective management and conservation.

    This research project investigates the role of fungi and fire in supporting the unique characteristics and ecological processes of pine savanna ecosystems. The study focuses on the mutualistic relationship between pine trees and mycorrhizal fungi, which are beneficial fungi that form symbiotic associations with plant roots. Mycorrhizal fungi assist the trees in absorbing water and nutrients from the soil, while the trees provide the fungi with carbohydrates and other nutrients.

    The research aims to understand how mycorrhizal fungi influence the growth, health, and survival of pine trees in the savanna ecosystem. Additionally, the study examines the effects of fire on mycorrhizal fungal communities and their interactions with pine trees. Fire is a natural and essential ecological process in pine savannas, but its impact on mycorrhizal fungi is not fully understood.
