  • The Unreliability of Judging Trustworthiness by Appearance: New Research
While it may be tempting to make quick judgments about a person's trustworthiness based on their appearance, research suggests that doing so is highly unreliable. The notion that someone's facial features or overall look can accurately indicate their trustworthiness is commonly referred to as "physiognomy" and lacks scientific support. Trustworthiness is a complex trait influenced by numerous factors such as personality, past behavior, and situational context, which cannot be reliably inferred solely from physical appearance. Multiple studies have demonstrated that people's judgments of trustworthiness based on faces are often inaccurate and susceptible to various biases. Therefore, relying on visual cues alone to assess trustworthiness can lead to erroneous conclusions and unfair prejudices.
