  • Sustainability Efforts: Progress & Knowledge Gaps - University of Cambridge Research
New Research Reveals We're Taking Sustainability Seriously, But We Lack Knowledge of What Our Actions Are Worth

A new study from the University of Cambridge has found that while people are increasingly concerned about sustainability, they often lack the knowledge to make informed decisions about their own actions.

The study, which surveyed over 1,000 people in the UK, found that 82% of respondents were concerned about climate change, and 78% were concerned about the impact of their own actions on the environment. However, only 39% of respondents could correctly identify the carbon footprint of a typical person in the UK, and only 27% could correctly identify the carbon footprint of a typical flight from London to New York.

This lack of knowledge is likely to be a barrier to people taking action to reduce their own environmental impact. If people do not know how their actions are affecting the environment, they are less likely to be motivated to change their behavior.

The study also found that people were more likely to be concerned about sustainability if they had a higher level of education, were younger, or lived in a rural area. This suggests that there may be a need for targeted education campaigns to raise awareness of sustainability issues among certain groups of people.

The researchers say that their findings highlight the need for more education about sustainability. They say that people need to be given the information they need to make informed decisions about their own actions, and that this information should be presented in a way that is easy to understand and remember.

"We need to make sure that people have the knowledge and tools they need to make sustainable choices," said Dr. Emily Ricketts, lead author of the study. "This means providing clear and accessible information about the environmental impact of different products and services, and making it easy for people to take action."

The study's findings are consistent with other research that has shown that people are increasingly concerned about sustainability, but that they often lack the knowledge to make informed decisions about their own actions. This suggests that there is a need for more education and awareness-raising on sustainability issues.
