Calculators are indispensable tools for working with percentages. Whether your device has a dedicated % key or not, the calculation remains straightforward: convert the desired percentage into a decimal and multiply.
To find half a percent on a calculator, multiply the base value by 0.5 and then press the % button. If your calculator lacks a % key, multiply by 0.005 – the decimal equivalent of 0.5%.
A percentage represents a portion of a whole, expressed as a fraction of 100. Thus, 100 % equals the entire amount, 75 % equals three‑quarters, 50 % equals one‑half, and 25 % equals one‑quarter.
For example, imagine a pie divided into eight slices. One slice equals 12.5 % (100 ÷ 8). If three slices are eaten, five remain. Converting the remaining five slices to a percentage yields:
\(\frac{5}{8} \times 100 = 62.5\%\)
Since 100 % equals 1, any percentage can be expressed as a decimal by dividing by 100. Half a percent is 0.5 % → 0.005 in decimal form.
On a basic calculator without a % key, perform the operation with the multiplication and equals buttons. For example, to compute 0.5 % of 240:
240 × 0.005 = 1.2
The result is 1.2.
If your calculator has a % button, enter 240 × 0.5 % = and you will obtain the same answer.
In a practical scenario, suppose a $200 pair of shoes is discounted by half a percent. The calculation is:
200 × 0.5 % = 1
The discount amounts to $1, so the sale price becomes $199.
