  • Determining Equivalent Fractions with Fraction Strips: A Step‑by‑Step Guide

By Charlotte Johnson, Updated Aug 30, 2022

Fraction strips are tangible tools that allow students to physically explore the relationships between parts of a whole. By cutting paper into consistent units—such as rectangles measuring 4 inches by 8 inches—you can compare different fractions side by side and see whether they truly represent the same quantity.

Step 1 – Choose Uniform Units

Select one or more sets of fraction strips whose entire units are the same size. For instance, you might work with rectangles that are each 4 × 8 inches. One rectangle could be divided into eighths, while another is divided into fourths.

Step 2 – Arrange the First Set

Lay out the first group of strips next to one another. In the example above, place four 1/8 strips from the first rectangle side by side.

Step 3 – Place the Second Set

Position the next set directly above or below the first, aligning the starting edge of each strip with that of the preceding group. You might place two 1/4 strips from the second rectangle in this configuration.

Step 4 – Compare the Widths

Visually compare the two arrangements. If the combined width of the strips is identical, the fractions are equivalent. If one group extends further, the fractions are not equal.

Using fraction strips in this way provides a clear, hands‑on method for confirming equivalence, reinforcing both conceptual understanding and visual intuition.
