  • How to Insert a Break in a Graph for Clear Data Representation

Data points on a graph can span wide ranges, especially for variables like monthly freelancer income. A sudden jump—from $2,000 to $8,000—creates unused vertical space and can obscure trends. Adding a break in the y‑axis eliminates unnecessary intermediate tick marks and keeps the chart focused on the relevant data.

    Step 1

Detect the discontinuity in your dataset and choose breakpoints that leave room for visual clarity. If your values span 12 000 and then jump to 34 000, set the axis to 10 000–32 000, creating space for the break.

    Step 2

Mark the y‑axis break. Draw two parallel, slightly slanted lines between the selected breakpoints—e.g., between 10 000 and 32 000—to indicate the omitted range.

    Step 3

Apply the break marker to any vertical bars that cross the omitted range. If a bar reaches 34 000, place the same break symbol on the bar, aligning it with the axis break.

    Step 4

For line charts, add two parallel horizontal lines extending from the slanted break marks. The data line should pause at the lower line and resume at the upper line, creating a clear visual gap.
