Percentages are simply another way to express fractions—both break down a whole into parts. By converting a fraction to a decimal, you can perform any arithmetic operation before turning the result back into a percentage.
Use a calculator to divide the numerator by the denominator of the first fraction, then note the decimal value.
Repeat the division for the second fraction and record its decimal equivalent.
With both decimals in hand, apply the required arithmetic. For example, to add 1/4 and 1/5: 1/4 = 0.25, 1/5 = 0.20; 0.25 + 0.20 = 0.45.
Multiply the final decimal by 100. In the example, 0.45 × 100 = 45 %, yielding the answer.
