Mastering percentages is essential for everyday decision‑making—from calculating tips and savings to interpreting data in scientific research. A percentage represents a portion of a whole, always expressed relative to 100, which denotes the complete set.
Because a percentage is fundamentally a ratio, it can be written as a fraction or a decimal. Converting between these forms is a useful way to verify your calculations and deepen your understanding.
To express a part of a total as a percentage, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, if 38 residents in a community of 230 hold library cards, the calculation is:
38 ÷ 230 = 0.165
0.165 × 100 = 16.5%
Thus, 16.5% of the community holds a library card.
A fraction can be converted to a percentage by scaling it so the denominator equals 100. For instance, to turn 4/25 into a percent, multiply numerator and denominator by 4:
4/25 = (4 × 4)/(25 × 4) = 16/100
16/100 = 16%
Similarly, 3/5 becomes:
3/5 = (3 × 20)/(5 × 20) = 60/100
60/100 = 60%
Using a calculator, you can also divide the numerator by the denominator to obtain a decimal and then convert that decimal to a percentage.
Converting a decimal to a percentage is straightforward: multiply by 100 and add the % sign. Moving the decimal point two places to the right achieves this:
0.8 × 100 = 80%
For decimals greater than 1, the same rule applies. If a library’s collection grew from 100 books last year to 134 books this year, the growth rate is:
1.34 × 100 = 134%
A value over 100% indicates an increase relative to the original baseline.
To express a percentage as a decimal, divide by 100. For example:
56% ÷ 100 = 0.56
5% ÷ 100 = 0.05
295% ÷ 100 = 2.95
These conversions help you interpret data across different contexts.
