While most scientific breakthroughs occur in laboratories, some of the most extraordinary finds come from everyday people. In Romania, a woman’s casual discovery of a rock in a stream bed turned out to be a national treasure worth more than a million dollars.

Rock hounds, metal detectorists, and even curious homeowners occasionally stumble upon relics that surprise them—and sometimes the world. One such case involved a simple stone that, after a detailed examination, was revealed to be a rare form of amber known locally as rumanite.
Amber is fossilized tree resin, a natural adhesive that ancient trees produced to seal wounds. When resin falls into water or is buried in sediment, it can harden over thousands to millions of years into the translucent gems we recognize today. While most amber is yellow or brown, rarer varieties—especially those with green, blue, or violet hues—are highly prized by collectors and scientists alike.
Rumanite is a distinctive type of amber found only in Romania’s Buzău region. Its characteristic red, black, and brownish tones set it apart from more common amber deposits.
The rock was found by a resident of Colți, a village along the River Buzău, in a stream bed near sandstone outcrops. Weighing approximately 7.7 pounds (3.5 kg), the piece was initially mistaken for an ordinary stone and was used as a doorstop in the homeowner’s kitchen.
Remarkably, the amber survived a burglary when thieves broke into the house to steal jewelry, leaving the stone untouched. Only after the homeowner’s relative—who inherited the item in the early 1990s—saw its unique texture did they realize its potential significance.
Following a sale to the Romanian state, specialists at the Museum of History in Krakow confirmed that the specimen was rumanite. Radiometric dating places its age between 38.5 and 70 million years, making it one of the oldest and largest intact amber pieces ever found.
According to El País, the government classified the rock as a national treasure and estimated its value at approximately $1.1 million.
