  • Sediment: Understanding Rock Formation and the Rock Cycle
The name for bits of rocks that are moved around and eventually form new rocks is sediment.

    Here's how it works:

    * Weathering: Rocks break down into smaller pieces due to wind, rain, ice, and other natural forces.

    * Erosion: These smaller pieces, called sediment, are transported by wind, water, or ice to new locations.

    * Deposition: The sediment settles and accumulates in layers.

    * Lithification: Over time, the layers of sediment are compacted and cemented together, forming new sedimentary rocks.

So, sediment is the key ingredient in the formation of sedimentary rocks!
