  • Understanding Sedimentary Rocks: A Guide to the Three Main Types
The three main categories of sedimentary rocks are:

    1. Clastic sedimentary rocks: These rocks are formed from fragments of other rocks, called clasts. These fragments are transported and deposited by wind, water, or ice, and then cemented together. Examples include sandstone, conglomerate, and shale.

    2. Chemical sedimentary rocks: These rocks are formed by the precipitation of minerals from water solutions. They can be formed through evaporation, chemical reactions, or biological processes. Examples include limestone, rock salt, and gypsum.

    3. Organic sedimentary rocks: These rocks are formed from the accumulation of organic matter, such as plant or animal remains. The organic matter is then buried, compressed, and transformed into rock. Examples include coal, oil shale, and limestone formed from the shells of marine organisms.
