  • Understanding Plate Tectonics: The African Plate's Influence on South America
The tectonic plate that pushes on the eastern edge of the South American Plate is the African Plate.

This interaction is responsible for the formation of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a divergent plate boundary where the two plates move apart. As they move apart, magma rises from the mantle, creating new oceanic crust. This process has resulted in the Atlantic Ocean widening over millions of years.
