  • Understanding Mountains: Common Characteristics & Formation
All types of mountains share these common characteristics:

    * They are landforms that rise significantly above their surroundings. This elevation is what defines a mountain, typically with a prominence of at least 300 meters (984 feet).

    * They are formed by geological processes. Mountains are created by tectonic plate movements, volcanic eruptions, or erosion.

    * They have a summit or peak. This is the highest point on the mountain.

    * They have slopes. These are the inclines on the sides of the mountain.

    * They can have a variety of features. Mountains can have valleys, canyons, rivers, glaciers, and forests.

While there are many types of mountains, all mountains have these fundamental features in common. They are a result of geological forces and stand as powerful symbols of Earth's dynamic nature.
