  • Understanding Sedimentary Rock Layers: Stratification Explained
The most noticeable feature of sedimentary rock layers, or strata, is their layering, or stratification.

    Here's why:

    * Formation: Sedimentary rocks form through the accumulation and cementation of sediments. These sediments often settle in layers, with the oldest layers at the bottom and the youngest at the top.

    * Visibility: This layering is often visible as distinct bands or beds of different colors, textures, or compositions.

    * Significance: Stratification provides valuable information about the geological history of a region, including the types of environments that existed, the changes in sedimentation over time, and the age of the rock layers.

While other features are present in sedimentary rocks, like fossils and ripple marks, stratification is the defining characteristic that sets them apart from other rock types.
