  • Understanding the Earth's Lithosphere: Crust & Upper Mantle
The uppermost part of the mantle and crust together make up the lithosphere.

    Here's a breakdown:

    * Crust: The outermost, rocky layer of Earth. It's relatively thin compared to the other layers and is divided into oceanic crust (thinner and denser) and continental crust (thicker and less dense).

    * Mantle: The layer beneath the crust, primarily composed of solid rock but behaves like a very viscous fluid over long periods. The upper mantle is where the lithosphere is located.

The lithosphere is broken into large, rigid plates called tectonic plates which move and interact with each other, causing phenomena like earthquakes and volcanoes.
