  • Understanding US Tectonic Plates: Which One Do We Sit On?
Most of the United States is on the North American Plate.

    There are a few exceptions:

    * A small portion of the west coast, including California, is on the Pacific Plate. This is why California experiences earthquakes and volcanic activity.

    * The Aleutian Islands in Alaska are on the Pacific Plate.

    * The southeastern tip of Florida is on the Caribbean Plate.

However, the majority of the US sits comfortably on the North American Plate.
