  • Lithosphere: Earth's Rigid Outer Layer - Definition & Importance
The nearly continuous shell of rock around the Earth is called the lithosphere.

The lithosphere is the rigid outermost layer of the Earth, composed of the crust and the uppermost part of the mantle. It's broken into large pieces called tectonic plates, which move and interact with each other, causing earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountain building.
