  • Biogenic Sedimentary Rocks: Formation, Types & Examples
Sedimentary rocks made up of once living organisms are called biogenic sedimentary rocks.

    Here are some examples:

    * Limestone: Primarily composed of the calcium carbonate shells of marine organisms like foraminifera, corals, and mollusks.

    * Coal: Formed from the accumulation and compaction of plant matter, mainly in swampy environments.

    * Chalk: A type of limestone made almost entirely of the tiny shells of marine plankton called coccolithophores.

    * Diatomite: Made from the fossilized remains of diatoms, single-celled algae with silica shells.

    * Oil Shale: Contains significant amounts of organic matter, primarily algae and bacteria, which can be extracted to produce oil and gas.

It's important to note that not all biogenic sedimentary rocks are made entirely of living organisms. Some may contain a mixture of organic and inorganic components.
