  • Understanding Earth's Crust: Composition, Thickness & Characteristics
The Earth's crust is the outermost layer of our planet, and here are some truths about it:

    * It's thin and brittle: Compared to the other layers, the crust is remarkably thin. It ranges from 3-5 miles (5-8 kilometers) thick under the oceans (oceanic crust) and 20-30 miles (30-50 kilometers) thick under the continents (continental crust).

    * It's made of different types of rock: Oceanic crust is primarily composed of basalt, a dark, dense volcanic rock. Continental crust is mainly made of granite, a lighter, less dense rock.

    * It's divided into tectonic plates: The Earth's crust is broken into large pieces called tectonic plates. These plates constantly move and interact with each other, causing earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and the formation of mountains.

    * It's where we live: The Earth's crust is the only layer where life exists, as we know it.

    * It's constantly being renewed: Oceanic crust is constantly being created at mid-ocean ridges and destroyed at subduction zones where it dives beneath continental plates. This cycle of creation and destruction is known as the rock cycle.

Let me know if you'd like to know more about any of these aspects of the crust!
