  • Sedimentary Rocks: Formation, Characteristics & Types
Sediments that are buried, compacted, and cemented together are called sedimentary rocks.

Here's a breakdown of the process:

    * Sedimentation: Weathering and erosion break down existing rocks into smaller pieces (sediments). These sediments are transported by wind, water, or ice and eventually settle in a new location.

    * Compaction: As layers of sediment accumulate, the weight of the overlying layers presses down, squeezing out water and air, causing the sediments to become more tightly packed together.

    * Cementation: Dissolved minerals in groundwater precipitate between the sediment grains, acting like glue to bind them together. This process creates a solid rock.

Examples of sedimentary rocks: Sandstone, limestone, shale, and conglomerate.
