  • Unconformities in Geology: Types, Causes, and Identification
When a layer or several layers are missing from a rock sequence, it's called an unconformity.

There are three main types of unconformities:

    * Angular unconformity: This occurs when tilted or folded sedimentary rocks are overlain by younger, horizontal sedimentary rocks.

    * Disconformity: This occurs when sedimentary layers are eroded and then covered by younger sedimentary layers, with the layers being parallel to each other.

    * Nonconformity: This occurs when sedimentary rocks lie on top of older igneous or metamorphic rocks.

Unconformities represent gaps in the geologic record, indicating periods of erosion, uplift, or non-deposition. They are important for understanding the geologic history of an area.
