  • Beyond Igneous, Sedimentary & Metamorphic: Exploring Rock Types
There aren't really any other main categories of rocks besides igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. These three categories encompass all the rocks found on Earth.

However, within these categories, there are various subcategories based on their mineral composition, texture, and origin. For example, within igneous rocks, you have:

    * Intrusive igneous rocks: Formed from magma that cools and solidifies below the Earth's surface.

    * Extrusive igneous rocks: Formed from lava that erupts onto the Earth's surface and cools.

Similarly, sedimentary rocks are categorized based on their formation:

    * Clastic sedimentary rocks: Formed from fragments of other rocks.

    * Chemical sedimentary rocks: Formed from the precipitation of minerals from water.

    * Organic sedimentary rocks: Formed from the accumulation of organic matter.

And metamorphic rocks are categorized based on the type of metamorphism they underwent:

    * Contact metamorphism: Occurs when rocks are heated by magma.

    * Regional metamorphism: Occurs over a large area due to tectonic plate movement.

So while there aren't other categories of rocks, the three main categories are quite diverse and encompass numerous subtypes.
