* The age of the oldest sediments varies depending on the drilling location. Other locations have yielded older rocks, but these are not sediments. For example, the oldest rock ever drilled in the ocean is a piece of the Earth's mantle, dated at 3.4 billion years old, recovered from the IODP Site U1371 in the northwest Pacific.
* The age of the Earth's oldest rocks is much older, at around 4 billion years. These are found on land, not in the ocean.
So, while the oldest sediments recovered by deep-ocean drilling are about 170 million years old, there are much older rocks found in other locations.
