  • Understanding Surface Water: Rivers, Lakes & Oceans
The water that moves over the Earth's surface is called surface water.

Here are some examples of surface water:

    * Rivers: Flowing water channels that carry water from higher elevations to lower elevations.

    * Streams: Smaller rivers, often with a narrower channel.

    * Lakes: Large bodies of water surrounded by land.

    * Ponds: Smaller bodies of water surrounded by land.

    * Oceans: The vast bodies of saltwater that cover most of the Earth's surface.

    * Seas: Large bodies of saltwater that are partially enclosed by land.

    * Wetlands: Areas of land saturated with water, like swamps and marshes.

Surface water is essential for life on Earth, providing drinking water, irrigation for crops, and habitats for plants and animals.
