The core is divided into two parts:
* Inner core: This is a solid sphere of mostly iron with a temperature of around 5,200° Celsius (9,392° Fahrenheit). The immense pressure from the layers above is what keeps it solid, even though the temperature is above the melting point of iron.
* Outer core: This is a liquid layer of iron and nickel, with temperatures ranging from 4,500° to 5,500° Celsius (8,132° to 9,932° Fahrenheit). The movement of this liquid metal generates Earth's magnetic field.
