  • Understanding Earth's Plates: What is the Lithosphere?
The layer of the Earth that is broken into separate sections called plates is the lithosphere.

The lithosphere is the rigid outermost layer of the Earth, composed of the crust and the uppermost part of the mantle. These plates move slowly over the asthenosphere, which is a semi-molten layer of the upper mantle. The movement of these plates causes earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and the formation of mountains.
