  • Earth's Crust Composition: Understanding the 3 Main Rock Types
The Earth's crust is primarily made up of three types of rocks:

    1. Igneous rocks: These rocks are formed from the cooling and solidification of magma (molten rock) or lava. Examples include granite, basalt, and obsidian.

    2. Sedimentary rocks: These rocks are formed from the accumulation and cementation of sediments, which are particles of rock, mineral, or organic matter. Examples include sandstone, limestone, and shale.

    3. Metamorphic rocks: These rocks are formed when existing igneous or sedimentary rocks are transformed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions. Examples include marble, slate, and gneiss.

It's important to note that these three rock types are interconnected through the rock cycle. Rocks can be transformed from one type to another over time through geological processes.
