  • Granite vs. Basalt: Silica Content & Rock Composition
Granite has more silica than basalt.

    * Granite is an igneous rock that is rich in silica (SiO2), typically containing around 70-75% silica.

    * Basalt is also an igneous rock, but it is lower in silica, typically containing around 45-55% silica.

The higher silica content in granite gives it a lighter color and a more felsic composition, while basalt is darker and mafic.
