  • Eric the Red and Greenland: Fact vs. Fiction - History Explained
Eric the Red did not discover Greenland. Greenland was already inhabited by the Inuit people for centuries before Eric the Red arrived.

Eric the Red, a Norse explorer, settled in Greenland around 985 AD. He was banished from Iceland for murder and led a group of Norse settlers to the southwestern coast of Greenland, where they established a colony.

While Eric the Red didn't discover Greenland, he is credited with giving the island its name due to its green coastal areas, in contrast to its icy interior.
