  • Haiti's Plate Boundary: Understanding Seismic Activity
Haiti is located near a transform plate boundary.

Specifically, Haiti sits on the northern edge of the Caribbean Plate, which is sliding past the North American Plate along the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault Zone. This fault zone is a complex system of transform faults that extends from Hispaniola (the island containing Haiti and the Dominican Republic) to Jamaica.

The movement along this boundary is what causes the frequent earthquakes that Haiti experiences.
