There are two main types of weathering:
* Physical weathering: This breaks down rocks into smaller pieces without changing their chemical composition. Examples include frost wedging, abrasion, and thermal expansion and contraction.
* Chemical weathering: This alters the chemical composition of rocks, breaking them down into new minerals. Examples include oxidation, hydrolysis, and carbonation.
Both types of weathering work together to slowly break down rocks over long periods of time.
