  • Southern Ocean Discovery: A Historical Overview
The Southern Ocean, also known as the Antarctic Ocean, doesn't have a single discoverer. It's a complex story:

    * Early Exploration: People have sailed around the Antarctic continent for centuries. Early explorers, such as James Cook, made significant journeys in the late 18th century, mapping parts of the Southern Ocean and proving it was a continuous body of water.

    * The "Southern Ocean" Designation: The term "Southern Ocean" was formally adopted by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) in 2000. This recognition was based on the scientific understanding that the waters surrounding Antarctica were distinct from the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans due to its unique currents and marine life.

So, while there's no single discoverer, the recognition of the Southern Ocean as a distinct ocean is a culmination of centuries of exploration and scientific understanding.
