  • Metamorphic Rocks: Identifying Non-Examples & Rock Types
Here are some non-examples of metamorphic rocks, categorized by what they actually are:

    Igneous Rocks:

    * Granite: Formed by the cooling and solidification of magma.

    * Basalt: Formed from volcanic lava flows.

    * Obsidian: A volcanic glass formed when lava cools rapidly.

    * Pumice: A light, porous volcanic rock formed by trapped gas bubbles.

    Sedimentary Rocks:

    * Sandstone: Formed from cemented sand grains.

    * Limestone: Formed from the accumulation of marine organism shells.

    * Shale: Formed from compacted clay.

    * Conglomerate: Formed from cemented gravel.

    Other:

    * Diamonds: Crystalline carbon formed under intense pressure and heat, but not due to the metamorphic process.

    * Coal: Formed from the accumulation of plant matter.

    * Marble: Although marble is a metamorphic rock, a raw block of limestone before it is metamorphosed is not.

Remember: Metamorphic rocks form when existing rocks are subjected to heat, pressure, or chemical reactions. Any rock that didn't experience these processes is not a metamorphic rock.
