  • Volcanic Activity: Where Volcanoes Never Occur & Why
You will NOT find volcanoes in the following places:

    * Stable continental interiors: These areas are far from plate boundaries and have very low tectonic activity. Examples include the central parts of North America, South America, Africa, and Australia.

    * Ocean basins: While volcanic activity is common along mid-ocean ridges, the deep ocean basins themselves are generally stable and lack volcanoes.

    * Areas with only horizontal tectonic movement: Volcanoes form primarily at plate boundaries where plates either collide (convergent) or pull apart (divergent). Areas with only horizontal movement (transform boundaries) have limited volcanic activity.

However, it's important to note that:

    * There are exceptions: For example, some volcanoes can form in areas with unusual geological conditions, such as hot spots. These are areas where plumes of magma rise from deep within the Earth's mantle.

    * Volcanoes can become extinct: A volcano that has not erupted in thousands of years is considered extinct. While they are no longer active, they were once volcanoes.
