  • Understanding Magma Types: Mafic vs. Felsic
Two common types of magma are:

    * Mafic magma: This type of magma is relatively low in silica (45-55%) and high in iron and magnesium. It is typically hotter than felsic magma and less viscous, making it flow more easily. Mafic magma often produces volcanic eruptions with fluid lava flows, like those found in Hawaii.

    * Felsic magma: This type of magma is high in silica (65-75%) and lower in iron and magnesium. It is cooler and more viscous than mafic magma, making it more difficult to flow. Felsic magma can lead to explosive volcanic eruptions, as the pressure from trapped gases builds up within the magma chamber.
