  • Volcanoes in Wisconsin: A Geological History
There are no active volcanoes in Wisconsin. Wisconsin is located in the middle of the North American Plate, which is a stable tectonic plate. Volcanoes are formed at plate boundaries where tectonic plates collide or pull apart.

While there are no active volcanoes, Wisconsin does have a rich geological history. Some areas of the state have evidence of volcanic activity from millions of years ago, but these volcanoes are long extinct.
