  • Volcano Types & Lava Flow: Understanding Volcanic Eruptions
Lava is produced by all volcanoes during eruptions. It's the molten rock that flows from the volcano's vent. The type of volcano doesn't determine whether or not it produces lava, it simply describes the volcano's shape and eruption style.

Here are some common types of volcanoes:

    * Shield Volcanoes: These have broad, gently sloping sides and are formed by eruptions of very fluid lava.

    * Stratovolcanoes (Composite Volcanoes): These are steep-sided volcanoes built up by layers of lava flows, ash, and other volcanic debris. They tend to have explosive eruptions.

    * Cinder Cones: These are small, cone-shaped volcanoes made up of loose, pyroclastic material (cinders, ash, etc.)

    * Calderas: These are large, bowl-shaped craters formed by the collapse of a volcano's summit after a major eruption.

So, while all volcanoes produce lava, the type of volcano can affect the type of eruption and the appearance of the lava flow.
