  • Emperor Vespasian & Governance of Pompeii Before the 79 AD Eruption
The ruler of Pompeii in 79 AD, when Mount Vesuvius erupted, was Titus Flavius Vespasianus, better known as Emperor Vespasian.

While Pompeii was part of the Roman Empire, it wasn't directly ruled by the emperor. It was governed by a local magistrate called a Duumvir (plural: Duumviri). We don't know the names of the Duumviri of Pompeii at the time of the eruption, but it's likely they were responsible for the initial response to the disaster.
