1. Troposphere:
- Closest layer to Earth's surface
- Contains most of Earth's weather and air we breathe
- Temperature generally decreases with increasing altitude
2. Stratosphere:
- Location of the ozone layer, which protects life from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation
- Temperature increases with increasing altitude
3. Mesosphere:
- Meteoroids often burn up in this layer as they enter Earth's atmosphere, creating visible streaks of light (meteors)
- Temperature decreases with increasing altitude
4. Thermosphere:
- Highest layer of Earth's atmosphere
- Temperature can reach extremely high levels due to absorption of solar radiation
5. Exosphere:
- Outermost layer, where Earth's atmosphere merges with space
- Extremely thin layer with very few molecules, gradually merging into the vacuum of space
