    The first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth was Sputnik 1, launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957. It was a small, spherical satellite weighing only 184 pounds (83.6 kilograms) and was about the size of a beach ball. Sputnik 1 orbited the Earth for 21 days before its batteries ran out and it fell back to Earth.
