  • Earth Science: Crustal Compression During Mountain Formation
When a mountain rises, one thing that happens is that the crust of the Earth is compressed at the sides of the mountain. This shortening of the crust can cause the formation of folds and thrust faults. Folds are formed when the layers of rock are bent upward due to the compression. Thrust faults are formed when the layers of rock break at the point of maximum stress and one sheet of rock is pushed over the other sheet of rock.
