  • Understanding Red Soils: Types, Characteristics & Uses
There are three types of red soils.

    1. Red Lateritic Soils: Found in areas of high rainfall and temperatures. Derived from the weathering of crystalline and metamorphic rocks, these soils have a high iron and aluminum content, giving them a reddish color. They are well-drained and have a good water-holding capacity.

    2. Red Sandy Soils: Found in regions with low rainfall and high temperatures, such as deserts. Derived from the weathering of sandstone, these soils have a high sand content, making them loose and well-drained. They are often poor in nutrients and have a low water-holding capacity.

    3. Red-Yellow Podzolic Soils: Found in temperate regions with moderate rainfall and temperatures. Formed from the weathering of a variety of rocks, these soils have a reddish-yellow color due to the presence of iron and aluminum oxides. They are typically acidic, have a low nutrient content, and are prone to leaching.
