As of 2023, mineralogists have identified and classified over 5,900 different minerals. The number is constantly growing as new mineral species are discovered, characterized, and approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA). The IMA is responsible for maintaining an official list of recognized mineral species and establishing guidelines for mineral identification and classification.
