  • Earth's Early Atmosphere: The Scarcity of Oxygen
The least plentiful gas in Earth's early atmosphere was oxygen (O2). The Earth's early atmosphere was composed mostly of hydrogen, helium, methane, and ammonia and there was very little oxygen. Oxygen began to accumulate in the atmosphere as a result of photosynthesis by cyanobacteria, which evolved about 2.7 billion years ago.
