  • Understanding Tensional Stress in Death Valley's Geology
The type of stress acting in Death Valley is tensional stress. The Earth's crust in Death Valley is being stretched and pulled apart due to the movement of tectonic plates. This extension is causing the rocks to fracture and form long, narrow valleys known as grabens. The most famous graben in Death Valley is the Death Valley Fault Zone.
